Stylish Ring Bearer Outfits For Your Springtime Wedding
Planning a wedding can be hell for a bride, particularly when it comes to dressing the bridal party. Choosing the right colors and styles can be difficult, unless its spring. With all the colors and styles available, spring weddings are a brides dream; and as we all know weddings are all about the bride. Except, of course, when the adorable little ring bearer comes marching down the aisle. He is the one person, in my opinion, who can and should outshine the bride – at least for a few minutes. So it’s important that you dress him right, because as much as I hate to say it I have been at weddings where that cute little boy wasn’t dressed so cute. There’s a fine line between precious and what-were-they-thinking ring bearer outfits. Hopefully these tips I came up with will help you.
One rule you should always remember is: gimmicky ring bearer outfits may look cute in a magazine, but they won’t look so cute 20 years from now in your wedding album. For example, if you’re ceremony is around Easter doesn’t mean you should have him wear every color of the pastel rainbow. Seriously I once saw a little boy wearing pastel blue, pink, yellow and turquoise. You want him to steal the spotlight, not people’s eyesight. Stick to neutral colors with maybe an accent color for the bow tie or cummerbund. Keep it simple so he wears the outfit, not the other way around.
Another good tip is that although you might see unique (translation: odd) ring bearer outfits, a traditional boys tuxedo is usually the best choice. I know, I know, tuxedos are so boring and traditional – but they’re not. They’re traditional attire for a reason: a tuxedo ALWAYS looks good. Face it, there is nothing cuter than little boys tuxedos, everybody oohs and aaahs when they see him. So even though its spring and the weather is warm, save the knickers (shorts for those of you born after 1980) for Halloween and get him a tuxedo. You can spice it up with a stylish vest or graphic tie. There are also plenty of boys suits you can pick if boys tuxedos don’t work. Trust me, you’ll look back at your pictures without cringing.
Many spring weddings take place in a garden or yard, so if you want to dress him in something less traditional/more casual you have plenty of choices. A stylish pair of Khakis, paired with a button down shirt and vest will have your ring bearer looking his absolute cutest. Pair it with a vest to up the cuteness factor to insanely adorable. You could also go with a pair of black jeans, button down shirt and suspenders and bow-tie for a nerdy/chic look that only a little boy could pull off (seriously no adult should ever wear suspenders). You can’t go wrong with either of these looks.
The most important thing to remember is: your ring bearer is a child, not a circus performer. Make sure he is both stylish AND comfortable. If he’s fidgeting or tugging, maybe the material or cut of the outfit is wrong for him. If he has a problem walking in dress shoes, let him wear black sneakers. He’s a child, he’s still going to look cute it’s not going to ruin the wedding. After all, weddings are all about the bride (until the ring bearer comes walking down the aisle).
Ring Bearer Fashion
A vintage style can be a great way for a ring bearer to be dressed for a wedding. This look goes particularly well with outdoor weddings but can look great with indoor ceremonies as well. One key component with this look is the choice of a bow tie and a newsboy styled hat. These are available through a variety of retailers and look great with a button front shirt, long shorts or pants and vintage styled tennis shoes. It is a comfortable look full of pieces that the parents will use again.
Top of the Line Fashion Sense
For the bride and groom who are trendsetters and always dressed in the latest styles it would only make sense that their ring bearer be as fashionable during the ceremony. There are several key pieces to creating this look. One is that a bow tie is going to be used again. In addition suspenders are a great way to give a young child some stylish flair. Dress pants, a button front shirt, a patterned pocket square, and oxfords completely take this child from the playground to the pew.
A Gentleman Approach
Styling a little guy to look like a gentleman is another trend that is popular especially in the southern US states. This look takes pieces that are created for spring and summer and puts them together in a way that will give the ringer bearer a style and personality while making him look fit for the country club. This ensemble requires a blazer, pants, shirt, bow tie, and flip flops to update it from traditional and boring to tradition with a flair.
The Eclectic Touch
With barn weddings being so popular it is important to have an idea of how to style a little one who is going to be the ring bearer on the farm as well. With this setting a nice pair of dark washed jeans, cute tennis shoes, a bow tie in a fresh pattern, suspenders, a newsboy cap, and a button up shirt will work perfectly to keep the child happy and able to play when the ceremony is over.
Ready to Walk in the Sand
Beach weddings are another popular trend where a ring bearer should be dressed appropriately for the weather but still look good enough to be a part of the wedding party. For this type of wedding a blazer and pair of shorts can be perfect with a fancy boutonniere, and a pair of boat shoes. Not only is this look perfect for warmer weather but it also still will look appropriate with any style of wedding party.
Too Cool for School
The trendiest boys will find many of these outfits to not be what they’d choose for themselves. Regardless of your wedding’s style a child can still reflect who he is and look great too. Choosing pieces like a dress vest, long sleeve button up shirt, fun patterned tennis shoes, and pants can help them to look cool while still being dressed up enough to represent in your wedding.
Grooming the Ring Bearer
So the big day is about to arrive; and in preparation for the occasion of your wedding, you have selected the perfect young man to fill the role of your ring bearer.
Ah, but the question is, is the child himself prepared for the role that plays such an integral role in the biggest occasion of your life?
No pressure there, right? You yourself are probably stressing the day of your wedding; so just imagine how a young child or teen must feel; especially if they have to hold or keep track of the ring—perhaps the most important symbol in the ceremony. Here are a few practical tips on how to groom the ring bearer:
- Make sure that the young man understands the duties and responsibilities that come with the position of ring bearer. This isn’t the easiest role in the wedding, so be sure that the boy knows when to claim the ring, when to carry it, and when to hand it off to the best man. The ring bearer is, in some ways, the second best man in any given wedding—make sure he knows and understands this role.
- At the same time, encourage the ring bearer to ‘ring in’ the festivities and have fun. A wedding is a loving and festive occasion, especially for the young people involved—encourage him to look forward to and celebrate the festivities.
- Let the ring bearer know that he doesn’t have to be perfect; after all, no one else in the ceremony will be; everyone is bound to make a mistake or two. And all will be forgiven in the name of love and family.
- Encourage the ring bearer to get the hang of it—or perhaps the ring of it. The more he understands and practices his duties, the more confident he’ll be on the big day.

Ring in the Ring Bearer
In the context of any marriage ceremony, the wedding ring takes a long journey before it makes it onto the bride’s finger; and this journey begins with the adorable little ring bearer that carries this timeless golden symbol to the altar.
Aside from being incredibly cute, the ring bearer holds a number of important responsibilities throughout the course of the ceremony. That is why the selection and preparation of a ceremonial ring bearer may not be as easy as it looks:
- The ring bearer should probably be over the age of 3-4; this owing to the fact that the cargo he’s carrying is integral to the ceremony. No matter how drop dead cute he may be, you don’t want a ring bearer that might drop the ring or lose it altogether before he reaches the altar; and far more seriously, you don’t want to take a chance that the child might try to chew on or swallow the pretty little band in his possession. In addition, you want to choose a ring bearer that will be able to walk slowly and quietly down the aisle; smiling cheerfully as he does so.
- Dress the ring bearer in much the same fashion as the groom and best man. An elegant tuxedo might be most suitable, as might a miniature three-piece suit; one that adheres to the color scheme of the wedding ceremony.
- Do some practice runs. Before the wedding, be sure to sit down and explain to the ring bearer just what they are supposed to do with the ring on the day of the ceremony. Go over the entire process with them, explaining how long he is supposed to hold the ring and when and to whom they should relinquish it. Then at the wedding rehearsal, let him try these duties on for size; letting him get the hang—and the ring—of it.
